Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is a branch of scientific research for regenerative medicine.There are several types of stem cells, with each category's difference being able to differentiate into different cell types, which is called potency. The categories are, from highest to lowest potency; 

• Totipotent

  • Totipotent stem cells are able to change into all cell types, including sperm and egg cells: totipotent stem cells are able to come together to create a full organism, as they are able to differentiate into all the cell types, from skin cells to brain cells.

• Pluripotent

  • Pluripotent stem cells are the next level of stem cells, being able to differentiate into all cell types except for sperm and egg cells. 

• Multipotent

  • Multipotent stem cells are often found in different types of blood cells. Research for multipotent stem cells is mainly going into the possibility of converting multipotent stem cells into pluripotent cells.​
